Sandhill cranes have arrived in So. Wisconsin

Last edited Sun Feb 25, 2024, 05:33 PM - Edit history (1)

Heard them bugling around 6:15 this morning. There is something about that sounds very pre-historic.

So this year the cranes beat the return of the turkey vultures. Both of those typically come back to Jefferson County in early to mid March. With a strong low headed our way, I'd not be surprised to see vultures by the end of the week.

They towered over the snow geese who co-piloted them.

I don't really know what to call it... It sometimes seems like a long cawing, but the volume and pitch remind me of bugling.

Every spring it reminds me of sounds from Jurassic Park.
