(5,474 posts)When I'm out in the field, the last thing I want is my phone coming between me and the non-human world. I use a camera, but it isn't telling me what my ears are hearing. If Merlin brings more people into birding, that's a good thing. But there are downsides as well.

(14,529 posts)Merlin and ebird require logins. People are having trouble with both, and some have lost lots of recordings with the recent upgrade.
I deleted Merlin some time back when the phones memory filled up.
People are displeased in more cases than I care to see. Maybe theyre good, but I never record. I photograph, and ID that way. When I can see them!
Every account is an attack surface, and my eye doctor is hounding me to create a portal login, as is the auto dealer. Portals were a new idea over 20 years ago. Security has gotten tougher to do. A ton tougher.
