When I'm out in the field, the last thing I want is my phone coming between me and the non-human world. I use a camera, but it isn't telling me what my ears are hearing. If Merlin brings more people into birding, that's a good thing. But there are downsides as well.

Merlin and ebird require logins. People are having trouble with both, and some have lost lots of recordings with the recent upgrade.

I deleted Merlin some time back when the phone’s memory filled up.

People are displeased in more cases than I care to see. Maybe they’re good, but I never record. I photograph, and ID that way. When I can see them!

Every account is an attack surface, and my eye doctor is hounding me to create a portal login, as is the auto dealer. Portals were a new idea over 20 years ago. Security has gotten tougher to do. A ton tougher.
