Related: About this forumWould someone be willing to give me a brief catch-up for the Super Bowl tonight?
I'm going to a Super Bowl party tonight. I used to watch college football but I've never watched much pro ball and things have been pretty busy in my life lately so I literally had to look up who is playing tonight.
If anyone feels like giving a summary of the two teams, what to watch for tonight, etc., I would be grateful!

(3,324 posts)Sometimes the guy in back gets disgusted and tries to throw away the ball they are all fighting over.Pretty much it. Does last a long time though!

Two brothers are playing for different teams. First time thats happened. Travis Kelce is the almost unguardable TE for KC. Jason Kelce is the center for Philly and he is really really good too.

(I did buy the album - I finally got it delivered a couple weeks ago - they raised $1.25 million for charities they support)

Jason wore his Mummers outfit back in 2018 and had some "choice words" in his speech then -
(and yes that went out over the broadcast airwaves )

(31,801 posts)his ability to elude the awesome Philly pass rush and improvise will win the game for K.C.
I expect K.C. to employ the short passing game and count on yards after the catch for a bulk of their offense, though Mahomes will have to throw long occasionally to keep the Philly secondary from playing too close to the line.
Head coach Andy Reid will outsmart Philly head coach John Sirianni.

(3,379 posts)So, I'll just add that you'll witness the Eagles crush the Chiefs. Sure, it won't be as easy as some other teams, but we'll win nonetheless.
I'd give a google to the lyrics for "Fly Eagles Fly."

(33,643 posts)This will be his 3rd Super Bowl start. He's 1-1 in the previous 2, and 10-3 in playoff/SB games. He averages 66.5 completion %, 300 passing yards, and 2.5 TD passes per game, and .5 interceptions/game, with an INT rate of 1.4 (throws 1.4 INT's per 100 pass attempts, IOW). These are all excellent numbers as averages.
He's also led the Chiefs to 5 straight AFC Championship games (2018-2022 seasons).
Dude is an absolute wizard in terms of extending plays and improvising, throwing on the run and off-balance, in part because he was a baseball pitcher as well in HS and College. And his father was a pitcher in the majors. You'll almost certainly see Mahomes pull off some amazingly athletic plays.
I hate the Chiefs cause I'm a Raider fan, so it's required. But I love watching Mahomes play, not only is he a flat-out stud, but he's a good sportsman, seems humble, and a team player. A class act, if you will.
And if he leads the Chiefs to victory he will become a walk-in Hall of Fame candidate already, at only 27 y.o.
Hurts is 24, and this is his first Super Bowl, and his 4th playoff/SB game. He's 2-1 in the playoffs, having made it in both 2021 and 2022 seasons (which are the 2 seasons he's been a starting QB).
Talking about his playoff averages is a bit meaningless with only a sample size of 3 games, but all his stats are well below those of Mahomes, except his rushing yards. He is big, strong, fast, tall and tough as nails, and he's a terror when he takes off and runs, which is often. He's not quite the passer Mahomes is, but he's solid passer with a big arm, and has improved by leaps and bounds over only 3 years in the league in this regard.
I believe this is the first SB featuring 2 QB's that are black (though Mahomes is biracial with black dad, white mom), I don't think we've ever been this close, if you will, to having 2 black dudes start the Super Bowl at QB.
And as you'll probably hear like 10 times, the KC coach Andy Reid coached at Philly for a stretch. He was kinda famous there for building excellent teams ... that couldn't quite get over the hump and win the big one.

(186,651 posts)Of course it all comes dont to turnovers and tackling - one slipped tackling can at least flip the field.
The Eagles have a better O line not that KCs is bad. It should be the Eagles game but if Mahomes is healthy he can win it on his own.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)If you gave the Chiefs QB/TE of the caliber of Hurts and Goedert instead, I think the Eagles win handily. I think they're overall the slightly better team, esp. on the D.
Should def. be a good one, I have no idea who's gonna win, neither team winning would surprise me. But if I was betting straight up, I'd lean Eagles.

(33,643 posts)And came back a week later and won the AFC Championship Game (although he was a bit ginger-looking at times). Now he's had 2 more weeks to recover for the SB. I'd guess he's going to suffer few ill effects ... unless someone hits it.
Which is very possible given the Eagles have a historically good pass rush this season.

(1,661 posts)Do you think Mahomes ankle will hold up? (It was recently injured making his mobilization possible issue.)
Will the Chiefs hold in the red zone? (Their defense has been weak in the red zone this season)
Slip in those two questions early and youre done. It will make people think you know what youre talking about. Keep quiet after that so you dont prove them wrong
Bonus declaration Prince was the best halftime show ever!

(33,643 posts)I have to place it 2nd after U2 in the first SB after 9/11 happened.
I cried when I watched it then, and I still do now all these years later (I've watched it many many times over the years ... guess I'm a glutton for punishment).

(33,643 posts)I really think this moment marked the point when the USA began the healing process after 9/11.
They were the right band, at the right place, at the right time, with the right songs ... I mean the place goes bananas, man. It's friggin amazing.
Make sure you watch to the end of Where The Streets Have No Name. There's never been a greater moment in a SB halftime show than Bono opening his jacket up right there. Nothing even close, really. Though Prince playing Purple Rain ... IN the rain ... was also hella magical.

(18,019 posts)(me) because she spent nearly a year there Sept '80 - Aug'81 on the 73rd floor in the NE corner office with such amazing views (and some cool co-workers) who watched that haft-time show! Very meaningful.
Actually before that they played ?4 dates in Oct '01 at MSG; they didn't cancel their tour.
Well... It was the first time I ever searched on-line for tickets (imagine being a newbie doing that)! At least I'd been on line since late '95.
I had to be there for first show. I got a ticket just 3 hours before the show!
Well, basically most of the audience to including me yelled, and sang, and danced through almost all the songs. Especially City of Blinding Lights partly written for NYC. Edge said when they walked on stage the roar of the crowd was like nothing they'd ever heard before.
It was also very moving that before the show at some point they visited what was then the "viewing platform" that had been built for people to get as close as they could at that point to see for themselves what happened. (I considered it, and all my later visits like bearing witness)
A fan I met some years later who was at the MSG show but much closer said when they played at times she could see tears running down their faces.
Way later I thought to watch Prince's half time show. That was great, too.

(14,705 posts)of the Chiefs, Andy Reed, used to be head coach of the Eagles and has worked with both Kelce brothers. Patrick Mahomes originally thought he would follow in his fathers footsteps and play baseball, but changed his mind deciding to play football instead. Patrick is co-owner of the womens soccer team in KC, the Kansas City Current along with his wife Brittany as well as Angie and Chris Long who started the team I believe.
