…dumbpf owned the New Jersey Generals. Basically killed the fledging league in its nest. Sued the NFL because he wanted the USFL to compete directly for eyes in the fall season.

He convinced the other owners they should play in the fall, and sue the NFL for antitrust violations. The billion dollars or so the would get in damages would allow them to make the switch, and compete until the NFL agreed to a merger.

It didn’t work. The USFL won — $1, which was trebled to $3. Pete Rozelle’s (NFL Commissioner) son took out his wallet in the courtroom and offered to pay right then. The USFL folded, and Trump never got his NFL franchise, which was his goal all along.
