Why Brock Purdy's throws were so "off" vs the Packers (it wasn't the rain):
The simple explanation: Because he was searching for big-play opportunities, he was late getting to his checkdowns. That helps explain why some of those seemingly low-risk passes were so off-target.
Michael Silver, San Francisco Chronicle / January 26, 2024
Excerpt:
Purdy: "I feel like early on, there were some decisions that I made that sort of made me feel a little tentative after. Obviously, that one that could have been intercepted (by Savage). Its like, Go through your reads and take the checkdowns when the defense presents itself the way it does and build off that. Rather than trying to search for the play and look for the big play and then when its not there, not having confidence in our checkdowns and stuff. So thats something that I have to be better at."

Silver: This would be problematic for any quarterback, but its especially concerning for Purdy. His ability to study the opposing defense, quickly discern its coverage and confidently and accurately throw the ball to the desired target is his superpower. Take that away, and in the words of one of the two Hall of Fame quarterbacks with whom I discussed this Wednesday its like Purdy is naked out there on the field. Unlike Mahomes or Jackson or Josh Allen, he cant fall back on exceptional athletic ability or arm strength (or both).

I don't expect Purdy to make this mistake again. I look for him and the 49ers to carve up the Lions' D.
