6 December 1969 The Game of the Century

#1 Texas at #2 Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas. Two honest to goodness legendary coaches, Darrell Royal and Frank Broyles. Nixon in the Stands. Cold, rainy, dreary day. I wasn’t at the game but I was in Fayetteville. We lived a few blocks from campus. Helicopters filled the sky.

Texas won 15-14. Nixon declared them National Champs in the locker room, which pissed off a lot of coaches.

As of 2023, with a Nielsen Rating of 52.1, remains the highest TV rating of any American football game in history, College or Pro (per Wikipedia.)

Arkansas the only team not from Texas in it and the only team which didn’t get in trouble with the NCAA way back when.

Wasn't Darrel Royal carried off the field on the shoulders of his players? For some reason that is a memory that kind of sits all by itself in the back of my mind

My horrid memory was Arkansas leading 14-0 going into the 4th and losing 15-14.

In the late 60s early 70s. Left, came back, left for good n 86 but it remains one of my favorite places. My names on Senior Walk, Class of 79, out Mullins library and off to the right. The student union was being built when I was there.

I have the DVD. I was a freshman at UT then. Terry Frei got into trouble later in Denver.

my elementary school principal came into the lunchroom to get everyone to "call the Hogs". The game itself was a real heart-breaker for Arkansas fans
