Niners wide receiver Braylon Edwards announced today that hes been released via a statement on Web site. The 49ers have confirmed the surprising roster move.
I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasnt allowed me to re-sync with the offense, Edwards wrote. I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans.
Edwards (15 catches, 181 yards, 0 TDs) has been ineffective, collecting just two catches for 14 yards in the past four games in which hes played. Still, the Niners decision to part ways in Week 17 is a surprising one given the timing and the state of their wide receiving corps which, at the moment, consists of Michael Crabtree, Ted Ginn, Kyle Williams and Brett Swain, a three-year veteran who has seven career receptions.
Ginn missed last weeks 19-17 win at Seattle due to an ankle injury and Williams exited in the fourth quarter due to concussion, according to the Sacramento Bee. The Niners will no doubt add another wide receiver to fill Edwards spot. Rookie Joe Hastings and John Matthews, a second-year pro who played for Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego, are their wideouts on the practice squad.
