Miami Dolphins naming Tua Tagovailoa starting quarterback

Rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will take over as the Miami Dolphins' starter beginning Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams, coach Brian Flores announced Wednesday.

With the Dolphins currently on their bye week, it will give Tagovailoa two weeks to prepare for the transition.

Tagovailoa's first NFL start will come 351 days after he suffered a dislocated right hip and posterior wall fracture. It has been a remarkable recovery from an injury that some thought could derail his ability to play high-level football again.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise because of the timing. Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick had been playing well, leading the Dolphins to two consecutive wins by a combined score of 67-17. He also has the seventh-best QBR (79.6) in the NFL.

Doesn't make sense to bench Fitzpatrick against the Rams' Aaron Donald. I'm reminded of the Bengals plan when Johnny Manziel made his debut for the Browns. Cincinnati tightened the box, blitzed on almost play, and got into Manziel's head. It was a debacle -- a horrible scenario for any rookie QB.

Hi trumad.

There is a very good chance that pick can get you one of three top QBs if Tua doesn't work out. They need to know what they have in Tua before next year's draft.

28-17

Didn't see the game, but from what I've read it sounds like the Dolphins defense was the difference. Still, it could have been Tagovailoa's game to lose. He completed 12 passes in 22 attempts for 93 yards and wasn't sacked or intercepted. That's a confidence-building start.

Rams T.O.P. 39:29, Dolphins 23:31. Total yards, 471 to 145. First downs, 31 to 8

Amazing how that works out.
