External storage for PS5

I finally scored a PS5 for my son after waiting a year. Within 2 days he filled up the storage. Anyone have a recommendation for an external storage device that would work? We bought one at Best But but had to return it as it wouldn’t store PS5 games. We have the specifications from Sony but they won’t recommend a particular brand. Thanks!

Congrats on actually getting hold of a PS5. The lack of storage right off the bat is pretty annoying. We ended up going with a Samsung 1TB external solid state drive and it’s been working flawlessly for months. It runs about $100 to $120. Eventually we’re going to have to do the same with the internal drive, and we’re planning to do a 2TB SSD for that.

One thing of note… at the time, we were only able to run PS4 games on the external drive, so we moved everything PS4 to the external and saved the internal drive for only PS5 stuff. I don’t know if Sony has changed that limitation. The only thing I know for sure is that Sony did release the update which now allows you to swap the internal HD for a bigger SSD and most should be fine for PS5 games. You may want to skip the external and instead replace the internal drive.

Happy gaming!

The main thing to remember is that the PS5 can play PS4 games from the external but in order to play PS5 games, they have to be on the internal drive. So... You can store them on the external but each time you want to play, you will have to copy it back to the internal. Very messed up but hopefully they will fix it.
