MMOs that shut down the servers are the most common. Activation servers that no longer exist or no longer recognize the game (good luck reinstalling it).

AFAIK, MMOs that require server connections are DOA when the server goes off-line (yet another reason I don't play MMOs).

A lot of it depends on the popularity of the game. Personal servers can be had even before the game goes offline, it depends on if someone makes it and releases it. Wiki has a list of some of them here:

I can still play it on a PC. I still have the original floppy it came on.

I have played hundreds of games over the years, and so far I can only think of one game that I couldn't get working or gave me a headache (GRAW 2, really buggy).

I remember getting a PS2 game with an "internet connection" (one of the SOCOM games I think) about 5 years after it came out. Hooked up the internet cable, no go.

The same version of the game on PC still had servers and people playing regularly.

You can go get Quake 1 right now, a game that's 15 years old, and find people playing it.

You can get an emulator and play any game made pretty much back to the inception of video games.

PC's are awesome.

That one being Might & Magic 8. I can get 6 & 7 to work, but not 8. There are a couple others that I could probably get working, but not without a major headache that makes it not worthwhile. I just with I had a working widescreen patch for KOTOR I & II.
