Mass Effect 3 - is this a game for me?

I'm not that much of a gamer, I've got a couple of games I've bought and not even played. I bought one and gameplay was so horrible (you had to hold down the left cursor button just to keep your character walking in a straight line) that it put me off PC gaming for awhile and I have no intention of getting into console gaming. I've got a Wii sitting in the corner gathering dust that I've used for less than an hour.

I watched my son destroy his life with WoW addiction. I liked Doom and several of the Valve games including Half-life 2 and Counter-Strike but prefer single-player mode. I'm tired of being screamed at for being a newbie. I like first-person shooters and loathe spell-casting games.

CAN$60 seems pretty steep for a game so I'd like to know what it's about before I fork out cash.

Is this a game I'm going to enjoy?

Also, why does it have to have an internet connection? Licensing, or is it only an MMORPG?

2. Apparently it's designed to be single user but has a multiplayer mode (from the links)

In addition to the single player component there is a new multiplayer mode.

3. Based on your question...

I'm going to assume that you haven't played the first two parts of Mass Effect, otherwise you'd have a pretty good idea of whether the game was for you. So my advice (if you decide that Mass Effect is for you) is start with the first part. The games have a fairly deep plot, so you'll enjoy it much more if you start from the beginning. Also Mass Effect 1 will be a lot cheaper so if you get it and don't like it'll be a smaller loss. One thing though: be prepared for sitting through a *ton* of dialogue (and a fair amount of reading) especially in the beginning, as the game establishes the plot and its universe.

Mass Effect is not an MMORPG, the first two games are strictly single player. The third game (I believe) has a multiplayer option, but it' only an option.

I've played both Mass Effect 1 and 2 and enjoyed them immensely (I also tend towards FPSs and don't like sword and sorcery type games, and only play single player), but I haven't gotten 3 yet because on PC it can only be run using Origin (EA's version of Steam), which I'm not keen on installing on my computer. That's also what you need the internet connection for because the game needs to be validated through Origin.

Otherwise, I just saw that Steam is having a sale on the Portal games. If you don't have them already I highly recommend them, though they are not first person puzzlers, not shooters. Otherwise you might want to look at Deus Ex: Human Revolution or maybe Fallout 3/New Vegas.

No internet connection required.

The endings are....meh, to say the least. But that's just coming from a diehard Mass Effect fan like myself.

6. The Mass Effect series is one of the greatest series in gaming, but you need to play them in order

Mass Effect is very story driven and you need to play all three games in order to get the full experience. Your save file from the first game gets imported into the sequels so decisions you make in one game will effect what happens in the sequels. The story changes in major ways depending on hundreds of different decisions you make throughout the story line, it is brilliant storytelling but to truly see that brilliance you need to play the whole series. So yes Mass Effect 3 is a good game, but no it is not for you. It will be for you once you beat the first two games, but you will be depriving yourself with a huge part of the experience if you play Mass Effect 3 first.

7. I've hunted all over town and the internet for a copy of ME 1

The only copies on Amazon are from the UK and I'm afraid they're the wrong DVD code or otherwise won't work in North America unless I'm willing to fork out $270.

The local game stores just laugh in my face.

did you buy it and like it?

I admit...as a female Shep I was totally head over heels in love with Liara from ME2 - we hooked up again.

ME2 was better IMHO...mainly because I didn't have to watch my friends die...gack!

...that's my CREW! I hate being pushed towards an ending...that's edit 2

1 was on Steam. Found 2 and 3 at the drug store of all places.

Haven't played any of it. It's summer and I'm out in the yard working.
