Late post: Successful deer hunt in Uvalde County!

Been offline for a couple months, but I can report that I took an 8 pt buck of decent size on the first evening of my 2nd hunt, just below Camp Wood. He was the only white tail that failed to wind me in the early evening swirl; seems he was sniffing the trail of a late-estrous doe and had little concern with what I was wafting. He would have walked past me at 50ft distance had I not reached for my rifle and spooked him. As it was, he scrambled off for another 50ft, then broadsided me, trying to figure out the moving "growth" clinging to a mesquite. Easy shot, quick recovery & field dressed 30 mins. later.

All told, I got 46 dove in other hunts. These went to patrons of a local beer joint in the form of bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers, and pan-browned, slow simmered milk gravy birds over grits (for me). And there's more to go!

We didn't get out but twice this season because of my sons health problems.

Looking forward to a better fishing season coming up.

I hope your son is getting better. I find being in the field is therapeutic. I have been perfecting my hamburger meat recipe; smells good when I open the fridge.

Deer numbers are down in Texas, but I find the land is better able to stand the smaller population, and the deer are healthier. Dove season was very good. Still have some left!
