General Gun deer season starts in Texas Saturday!

One of the "ranchita's" owners will get the pre-dawn start, I'll get the p.m. time up on the mesa. Looking for 71° high, sunny, NE wind. As I write this, the rain in Austin has been non-stop since midnight; nice light show. Rain tapers on Halloween. Between deer both stuffing their guts after the rain and looking to get laid, I should stumble onto something to fill the freezer!

Starry, starry night.

I kid, I kid. Jealous up here in NYC.

Looking forward to the post-Thanksgiving trip to LA, visiting the future parents-in-law and their lovely, wide-open farmland right in the middle of the season..

2. Well, get your license now! I hear that Upstate NY has a deer "problem."

Maybe you can latch onto a farmer or orchard keeper and help out?

Aside from the fact that my favorite all-round hunting rifle is an "assault weapon" and more or less banned, even getting my completely innocuous bolt-action rifle up here is an immense hassle. NYC expects me to pay $240 and go through an intensely convoluted licensing and registration process, in person, on a weekday. So much for "respecting hunters"...it's literally cheaper to store them in the safe in LA and fly down there once a year.

I've read where "rockers" is shorthand for "rocking chairs," a descriptor of a "big rack," which also suggests big calibers.

you consider the weight of the bullet, and the powder charge. That set up should drop a deer in its tracks. Good luck on your hunt.

However, if you run out of space in your freezer, I can "volunteer" some room in mine.

Good luck and stay safe!

Tacos with pico degallo & fajita over a mesquite fire, along with pork chops & potatoes-in-the-coals under dense stars and mid-40 temps.

Sat under a tree and saw a big doe who wouldn't stay still long enough to line up a shot, and disappeared into cedar. But such deliberate behavior meant only one thing: A buck was quaffing in her precious bodily essence. He was even more deliberate, and wouldn't respond to my "ba-a-a-a" sounds, but evidently he took the doe's warning and froze unadvisedly in a nice clearing while I wallowed into position for a textbook broadside shot; recovered quickly 50 yds away. Now, undergoing "redneck aging" out on the patio!
