They service several destinations (often dozens) and stop all night long. They need to be aware of who is getting off and check on each of the new passengers.

If you're in a sleeper, then they know who you are and what your destination is. Much easier to manage.

They knew I was coming and had the bed freshly made up.

But because of Amtrak's crazy schedules, they DO call out the stations in the middle of the night--because the underfunded trains (which is why there's only one run in each direction each day) can hit certain stops only in the middle of the night.
