A high-end vacation doesnt have to mean spending big dollars. Here are 10 cities where you can have upscale experiences without paying premium prices.
'Luxury travel can be experienced in two ways: by paying top dollar or by paying less. Given the choice, wouldnt you pick the latter?
Of course, the idea of what luxury travel is can differ depending on the person. For some, it means hotels with butlers and fancy sheets and flying first class; for others, its about hitting three-Michelin-starred restaurants and hiring the occasional private guide and car with a driver.
Ultimately, it doesnt matter how you define high-end travel. What matters is that it doesnt have to be had at a premium price.
Here, 10 destinations where you can save money on an upscale trip without sacrificing a feeling of luxury.'>>>

(19,136 posts)I'm not selling anything but I want you to look at my galleries, especially the seven France galleries.
The people, the scenery, the towns, the food... all are marvelous.
Enjoy!

(13,960 posts)I took 5 years of French thru Jr High & High school and half of my house is literally Paris everything
I've researched the different Arrondisements, what is where, where I really want to take walking tours, etc. I am a Hemingway in the 20's kinda Paris junkie too... lol I think I will get my TEFL certificate and use it to work PT teaching kids English as my "retirement."
I have told my kids for years when they turn 18 I am OUT. Passport in hand and sell the fucking house and just GO! (3 more years! )

(19,136 posts)And this was my... wait... lemme look... 6th visit to Paris and just now I am feeling like I kinda 'know' the place. But I arm myself w/a good Metro map (there are some good apps versions for your phone).
Tip: If you go to the Orangerie Museum, you can get a ticket to the Orsay as well at a big discount! Didn't know that till last time. And the Orangerie is nice and manageable and has splendid works.
And this last trip was the FIRST time I took one of the bateau mouche tours and it was a wonderful hour! Do it.
I used to teach French so I get along pretty well w/the language.
In my trips I have been to Normandy, Brittany, SW and southern France, Provence and le Grand Est. I loved them all and they were each unique. I think I am kinda partial to Brittany and Normandy. I like the ocean, having been raised in NC and now living in GA.
Enjoy!!

(13,960 posts)I like languedoc-roussillon, found some awesome seasonal rentals, off season. And it is near Nice/Marsielles, so that could also be a fun visit. But I also want to have a rural-hub to then metro and explore all over Especially if I get a 4-6 month visa!
What's also perfect is that their "off season" is our winter/ski season...I am FINE doing a 6 month rental of my place so I can come back in Spring lol

(3,007 posts)My wife and I are so excited. I'm not sure if we'll be in Milan though. I'm actually going for work, so I'll be in central Italy for a few days. Then they cut us loose to go where we want. We don't have a lot of money so we definitely have to travel on a budget. We'll probably only have a few days after the business part of the trip, but we'll try to see as much as we can. Thanks for the post!

(135,777 posts)FLORENCE (if art is your thing,) but let us know where in central Italy starting from, and we'll play (in our minds!)
Unless you're already travelers, you already know not to plan TOO much; pick one or 2 spots, for your 'few days.' And TRAINS!

(3,007 posts)My wife has expressed interest in Pisa and Pompeii. We do plan on riding trains as much as possible. I know we'll be near Maranello so I would like to see the Ferrari Museum if it works out. The problem for me is I could spend an entire month there and still not get to see everything I would like to see. The factory I'm going too will probably take us on an excursion somewhere. I know they brought everyone to Rome a few years back. We might make it through Florence too, but I just don't have enough details on my schedule yet to make any concrete decisions. I know I like the really ancient Roman and Greek architecture. I was in Athens about 25 years ago and got to see the Acropolis. I'm just excited to go and will be happy where ever we end up.

(135,777 posts)Pompeii includes Naples (basically) which is a real excursion, and then there's Capri!
NO WAY you'll see everything, so make this the BEGINNING of your Italy explore, and plan to return!

(3,007 posts)Once I get more details on how we're getting in and where we're going on the first few days, I can make a better plan for the rest. Rumor has it that we're flying in to Milan. If that's the case we probably won't go to Pompeii, but will hang around the northern part. We can't lose though. Neither of us have ever been to Italy, and it's my wife's first time out of the US. I just got my new passport in the mail yesterday and my wife's should be here any day.
