Related: About this forumWhat a great road trip!
We arrived Dulles on the 15th, rented a car, and headed out. Drove Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah, down the Blue Ridge to Linville Falls, then over and down to Savannah. From there it was up the coast through Savannah, Beaufort, Charleston, Georgetown, Ocracoke and Hatteras islands; then through Fort Raleigh, Yorktown, Jamestown, Williamsburg, Culpeper, with the final stop at Sully Plantation.
The weather was gorgeous. We arrived the day after a series of storms; with the exception of three short thunderstorms (all of which occurred in the late evening and which we thoroughly enjoyed) the weather was mostly sunny, in the mid-80's, and with low humidity. The last two days in Virginia were in the low-90's, and higher humidity, but not like they get later in summer. With the exception of our stay at Mansfield Plantation (outside Georgetown, SC) the bugs were hardly noticeable.
Did lots of hiking, sightseeing, met some wonderful people. We had a great time. I'll post a couple pictures once I get them all sorted out.

(146,218 posts)Did you eat lots of good food?
We made an across the country and back road trip last year and tried, as much as possible, to never use a chain of any sort. That meant lots of little eating places and mom & pop motels.
You have made me want to start planning my next road trip.
Welcome home!

(19,459 posts)with the exception of boiled peanuts and eastern North Carolina vinegar-based BBQ (loved all the BBQ we tried except that one). We became major fan of sweet potato pancakes and southern style biscuits and gravy. Made most of our lunches from the fare of local produce stands/farmers markets. Also enjoyed steaks and southern seafood.
We ate well.
Enjoyed several B&B's; our two favorites being Afton Mountain Inn in Virginia, and Mansfield Plantation in the Low Country of South Carolina.
It was a great time.
Edit: You mentioned planning your next road trip. We're planning one for next summer with our adult daughters and son-in-law. Switzerland, southern France, and Spain (all via train). We have a friend in Switzerland who will be going with us; Daniella speaks several European languages, and is a major asset to our vile German and Spanish.

(146,218 posts)On our last trip, we spent some time meandering around the same area. We found some great little cabin retreats that we loved and thoroughly enjoyed the food.
As to raw peanuts, I agree, but we had some peanut soup that was to die for. And the ham..... heavenly.
Your trip to Europe sounds fabulous and I hope you have the time to really soak it in.

Weather was gorgeous, and the scenery, food, and (most of) the people were great!

(34,294 posts)In Beauford we stayed in this great B&B - http://www.rhetthouseinn.com/ - about 12 years ago or so. We stayed in the original cottages, but it looks like they now have added on an additional cottage. Very pretty little town.
