Related: About this forumWhat are your travel plans for 2013?
The 2012 thread was lots of fun, so I thought I would start the 2013 thread.
We plan a 2 month road trip in April and May, with both weekends of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as the major focus. We love these trips, which we take every 2 years or so.
We tend to stay completely off highways and meander through the country stopping to visit friends, eat at local places, stay in mom and pop motels, visit natural national treasures and historic sites and seek out weird and wacky pieces of Americana.
This year we will head from the west coast to New Orleans (with stops on the way), then travel the gulf coast and up the east coast to DC. We will come back via another route.
How about you?

(48,217 posts)1. Going to Hawaii in late May-early June for a translators' convention
2. Going to Japan next fall for the annual meeting of the board of a translators' organization
Any more that I can afford/squeeze in? If the business and finance elves smile upon me, why not?

(146,218 posts)Hope you get out of Honolulu in Hawaii. I really didn't like it there when I went to a conference.
Japan, OTOH, is on my list for sure. Don't know when, but I will get there.

(48,217 posts)Honolulu isn't my favorite place, but the island of Kauai has such diverse topography and climate within an area about 20 miles by 30 miles, and much of it is unbelievably spectacular.

(46,436 posts)In March we'll go out to Nome for 10 days for the finish of the Iditarod. Then in May, we'll drive down to Haines and take the ferry to Juneau and Sitka and back. I love southeast Alaska, and my husband hasn't been down there yet, so we'll spend a couple of weeks down there exploring around. (The ferry is better than a cruise because you can take your vehicle.). In July we're going to Denver for a week to visit our daughter. September we'll go to the Bay Area for a few days, and now we're kind of thinking about taking a trip to Turkey in November just for something different. I've only traveled out of the country once, to Costa Rica a couple of years ago, and my husband thinks I need to get out more. . Then Denver and LA at Christmastime to visit the families.
Boy, it sounds like a lot when I write it all down.

(146,218 posts)I have been to 49 states but not Alaska. Would love to go.
I went to Turkey last year (Istanbul) and absolutely loved it. If you want any advice about that trip, just let me know.

(55,687 posts)In particular the Guadalupe Valley and other area wineries. I just learned about Russian immigrants settling the area in the 20's and know of the current developements in winemaking/growing in the area. Plus I haven't seen the sea in 10 years. Really needing a break.
I would like to take the ferry back across to Guaymas or wherever (guess I better start looking into that soon LOL) and drive back up through Sonora or even cross over the mountains and return through familiar territory in Chihuahua.

(36,113 posts)The QLD one is a cruise from Sydney up to the Great Barrier Reef, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays and then back again...
My daughter's taking me on a trip for my birthday and we're flying to Auckland, going to Rotorua and Lake Taupo, then back to Auckland to do a 12 night cruise round New Zealand, then to Hobart and finishing in Sydney...
I'm kind of jealous of people who are doing trips in the US, though. My brother came back on Friday from the US and talked it and the people he met up so much I really would like to do a trip there...
