Pope to church: Bring abusers to justice

From the article:

Shortly before Christmas, Pope Francis declared in response to the sexual abuse crisis that “the church will spare no effort to do all that is necessary to bring to justice whosoever has committed such crimes.” He promised that “the church will never seek to hush up or not take seriously any case.”
For decades, people have been hoping for such a statement from a pontiff, which Francis made in a public address to the Roman Curia, the offices in the Vatican that help him govern the church.

The Pope is the leader of the RCC, and the leader is always responsible for what happens in an organization. While the words are needed, and overdue, the only way that the actions will match the words is if changes are made to ensure that coverups are a thing of the past.

Otherwise this is just another PR move designed to stop the hemorrhaging on the tithing income.

but am hoping that it is the beginning of necessary change within the vatican. Time will tell.

There are voices (like marie collins) that are necessary in the catholic world. She's been a bug in their ear for awhile now. But on a local level, there are more people holding local parishes and diocese to the fire. People are pissed and want change. If they do not change, the church will slowly die out while grasping to every last thread of power that it previously held.

That charge was made public in 2002 and it's pretty much impossible to believe the RCC didn't know about it well before. So for at least 16 years the Vatican had strong reasons to believe they had a child rapist in their midst and did absolutely nothing about it. For 5 of those years pope Frank was the HMFIC.

So there's what pope Frank says, and there's what pope Frank does, and those two things don't reconcile.
