Texas Republicans Will Vote on Whether to Remove Muslim-American From GOP Position Because of His Religion
As the House of Representatives welcomes its first two Muslim congresswomen, Texas Republicans will vote on Thursday over whether to remove Tarrant County Republican party vice-chair Shahid Shafi from his seat because he identifies as a Muslim-American.
The vote comes after some members of the county party put forth a motion to remove Shafi, a Republican trauma surgeon and Southlake City councilman, from his position due to his Islamic beliefs.
Dorrie OBrien, a precinct chair, expressed fear that Shafi would uphold Islamic law over the U.S. constitution and that he might be related to Islamic terror groups.
We dont think hes suitable as a practicing Muslim to be vice chair because hed be the representative for ALL Republicans in Tarrant County, and not ALL Republicans in Tarrant County think Islam is safe or acceptable in the U.S., in Tarrant County, and in the TCGOP," O'Brien wrote on Facebook. "There are big questions surrounding exactly where Dr. Shafis loyalties lie, vis a vis Democrat and Republican policies.

(6,212 posts)they should be ashamed for even considering removing him. Scary to think there are some people in government positions who think that way. The members who considered removing him should be the ones removed.

(36,900 posts)It's not as if Southlake is a bastion of tolerance in the middle of a sea of wingnut rock hard stupidity. It's just that the god of money speaks a loud louder than the zombie god.
As far as I can tell the guy is almost completely irreligious or at the very least keeps his beliefs completely private. Yet for the sin of daring to identify as a Muslim, he must be purged from the GOP.
Just as I predicted, the vote to remove him wasn't successful, but you still had about a quarter of these dumshits that voted for his removal. It just underscores how the fight against theocracy is ongoing.
