Nones, RCs, Evangelicals -- In that order

A new survey indicates that "Nones," those with no religious affiliation are increasing in numbers, and have reached the percentages enjoyed currently by the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Evangelicals are now #3 on the list of religious preferences, according to a recently released poll. Here's an article from the "National Catholic Reporter"

'Nones' now as big as evangelicals, Catholics in the US

In a shift that stands to impact both religion and politics, survey data suggests that the percentage of Americans who don't affiliate with any specific religious tradition is now roughly the same as those who identify as evangelical or Catholic.

According to newly released General Social Survey data analyzed by Ryan Burge of Eastern Illinois University, Americans claiming "no religion" — sometimes referred to as "nones" because of how they answer the question "what is your religious tradition?" — now represent about 23.1 percent of the population, up from 21.6 percent in 2016. People claiming evangelicalism, by contrast, now represent 22.5 percent of Americans, a slight dip from 23.9 percent in 2016.

That makes the two groups statistically tied with Catholics (23 percent) as the largest religious — or nonreligious — groupings in the country.

"Nones have been on the march for a long time now," Burge said. "It's been a constant, steady increase for 20 years now. If the trend line kept up, we knew this was going to happen."

you just made my day.

My feeble minded observation's tended to agree with your post. On our Sunday morning foray's to the DIY Store we go buy one of those so called Mega Church's and the Parking Lot's are less and less full.

Our neighbor does the Janitorial at this so called Mega Church, and she claims the numbers are dropping and as a result, her hours have been cut due to Budget issues.

Proud to call us as None's . Life is good!

after dealing with those Mega operations in your area, yah, could be.

A fact of life in Vegas is,the population turns over every Seven years. And from just a feeble observation of the mentioned so called Church, appears to be Olderster's and the forty something crowd. Do not see many Tweenies .

Hey,some need Crutche's and that is the Opioid of masses.

is dependent on Social Stresses at any given time.

Many seek out like minded Tribal Individual's in order to placate their belief systems.

As the Feudal Systems of Eourpe came under attack, the Feudal Lords turned their personal family Religious figure loose on their Subjects. In saying that, boy oh boy,we some lessons are taking a bit longer to learn.

Should be "Do you have a religious tradition?" and would probably get even more "none" responses.

The assumption that everyone has a "religious tradition" is what has kept many non-religious people in the shadows.

I don't know. I'm not sure of their reason for putting the question that way.

Still, the result is striking, I think.
