Ex-Pope Benedict XVI blames 1960s revolution for sex abuse

So, for everyone who was wondering about what caused thousands of priests to sexually abuse countless children, the previous Pope of the Roman Catholic Church has the answer: It was the damned hippies!

And the blind Pope leads the blind congregation over the edge of the cliff....

Ex-Pope Benedict XVI blames 1960s revolution for sex abuse

Retired Pope Benedict XVI has published a letter which blames clerical sex abuse on the "all-out sexual freedom" of the 1960s.

He said that cultural and historical change had led to a "dissolution" of morality in Catholicism.

The sexual revolution in the 1960s had led to homosexuality and paedophilia in Catholic establishments, he claimed.

The letter sparked fierce criticism from theologians who claim it is "deeply flawed".

And Rock n' Roll led to the hippies who created the "sexual revolution," and like that. How could priests resist such a thing, after all? It's not like they took vows or anything, after all...

I don't understand how they can continue to ignore their own role in the abuse.

The sexual proclivities of the Catholic church have been well known for hundreds of years now. Chaucer alluded to it The Canterbury Tales, and their were other authors who wrote about the inability of many in the clergy to keep their habits down. Everyone knew that a lot of them couldn't keep their vows, but it was accepted because openly questioning the church about anything could get them in a lot of trouble. The church doesn't have the power it once had, so people aren't putting up with it anymore.

If the Catholic church wants to survive, they're going to have to do some major reform, but that will piss off the hardcore Catholics who love all the church's medieval structure and practices. The future of that church is in serious jeopardy, at least for the churches in Europe, North America, and Australia.

that they identify as having credible evidence against them as pedophiles. Considering the dates that they listed, there are apparently multiple time travelers just in this area. At least one priest was doing it back in the 1940s.

He's blaming the 60's, but for the wrong thing. He's right about the cultural and historical change. John summed it up nicely when he said the Beatles are more popular than Jesus. Since then, the church's popularity has continued to fall. Priests have done what they've always done, only now, people are freeing themselves from their depravity.

He says "the death of God in a society" means "the end of freedom" and the solution is to "live by God and unto Him".

You need god to be free. I don't think that's what being free means.

we laypeople have. The Dictionary of Churchspeak, or something like that. Here's what the definition looks like.

Freedom - n.

1. The state of utter obedience to God and His spokesman on Earth.
2. The action of faithfully following the doctrines of the Church.
3. The unquestioning acceptance of God's directions and commands.

The church and its leaders are WAY overdue to own this scandal, to come clean about how things really are, and fix the damage its policies have caused. And here is Ratzinger pawning off responsibility. Color me surprised. What next, Ratzinger? Women are to blame for being raped, because they were asking for it?
