Back in February, Cardinal Tobin and the other bishops in New Jersey made a conscious effort to release the name of certain priest abusers, said Greg Gianforcaro, one of the attorneys. They have claimed to be open and transparent. Their list was horrendously inadequate.
In a statement, the Archdiocese of Newark said it continues to report abuse allegations to law enforcement officials and the church encourages victims to come forward.
The abuse is bad enough. The cover-up makes it that much worse.

(147,575 posts)Please don't do that. Also, please correct the link in that post. It leads incorrectly to a post of mine in a different thread. It is a false call-out of me. Thanks in advance for your cooperation in that. I will check to see if you have made the correction.

(147,575 posts)Please fix it. It still leads to my post, rather than the one you quoted.
When you fix that, perhaps we can talk again.

(14,703 posts)it is quite possible that this organization is an agent of abuse itself, that the cover up is part of its culture of child abuse, not just some bureaucratic malfunction.

(147,575 posts)The very definition of being an "accessory" to a crime is knowledge of the crime and failing to do anything to prevent that crime.
In the case of the RCC, child sexual abuse was often reported to officials of that organization, who took steps to cover up the crime and to send the criminals to a different place where they could commit the same crimes again. So, they often did, again and again.
The deference paid to religious organizations with regard to acting as accessories in sex crimes against children is an enormous scandal. Outrage is the only possible response.
Time after time, the Roman Catholic Church knew of such crimes and did nothing, or simply sent the offenders elsewhere without any assurance that they would not commit similar crimes again. For decades, and even longer, such actions occurred in multiple places and in multiple nations.
And yet, some still make excuses for the organization. What a shameful response to such a horrible thing!
