The news media really needs to have a serious conversation as to why some churches are staying open

The elephant in the room here is greed. The reason they are gathering people has nothing to do with Jesus protecting them and everything to do with keeping the collection plate full. The reality is there's just no shortage of church operations who believe fleecing the flock is more important than keeping the wolves away.

If this were anything but religion that's what everyone would be talking about, but because it is religion nobody is. That, friends and neighbors, is what religious privilege looks like. If it were just them endangering themselves, that would be one thing, but they are endangering everyone else. The reason they get a pass for it is nobody wants to talk about the ugly truth which simply enables them and shitstain politicians who pander to them at the detriment of everyone.

Opens them up to their feeling like a TV show. Easy to ignore. Oops, gotta go to the bathroom, maybe grab a snack on the way back... Is this still on?

There are no call-and-response of Amen and Hallelujah to get a crowd hyped up. No pressure put on people when an actual physical collection plate is put in front of them. Most of these preachers are of the prosperity-gospel stripe, and I'm sure they had some humdingers of a sermon for Easter that would have worked in, "planting a seed," in this time of both seasonal and spiritual renewal (hot damn, I should be a prosperity-gospel preacher - that's poetic as shit).
