War on Christmas

It's 2020 and the Christmas season is here again. So get prepared for the latest version of the "War on Christmas" to begin.

It all started in 2004 when Fox's Bill O'Reilly had a segment entitled "Christmas Under Siege" in which Sarah Palin was promoting her new book, "Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas". In which she said that “major corporations ordered their employees not to say ‘Merry Christmas.”

A couple of days later, Pat Buchanan declared curbs on Christmas to be “hate crimes against Christianity”. Now almost 2 decades later the "War Over Christmas" is just something we do every year, like wrapping presents or drinking eggnog. Maybe with the Corona Virus it will mellow out a bit?

In around 2015 Starbucks caused a big controversy releasing secular festive cup designs around the holidays. They were accused of "erasing Christmas". Trump suggested boycotting the chain. He said, “If I become President, we’re all going to be saying Merry Christmas again.” And so it goes.

It's up to everyone ensure that people of all religions, ethnicities, and races feel safe, heard, and understood in this country. That starts with acknowledging the choices of those different from you.

Maybe wishing someone “Happy holidays!” is a a good start?

Happy Yule!!

It didn’t go well for him but the Giants won and we were both happy.

It's entirely possible to be pleasant and polite and friendly toward people, without mentioning any holidays at all.

that no one ever uttered the words Holiday or Holidays in December until recently. It's a lie. I've read a bunch of old newspapers, mostly from the 1890's but some were later. In December these old papers were chock full of ads and stories for Holiday sales, Holiday parties, Holiday parades, Holiday concerts, Holiday items, Holiday trips, Happy Holidays from XYZ store, etc. etc. etc.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas were used interchangeable when I was a kid in the 60s. The idea that not saying Merry Christmas represents some type of attack on Christmas and Christian values shows just how far reich-wing media has gone off the rails.

That one gets 'em going, even though it's really only an invitation to pick the one they like and act like that's what I said.
