Canadas Catholic bishops apologise for abuses in residential schools
Reuters
Sat 25 Sep 2021 04.43 BST
High-ranking Catholic bishops in Canada have officially apologised for their role in the countrys notorious residential school system for the first time, after refusing to do so for years despite public pressure.
The organisation expressed profound remorse and apologised unequivocally along with all Catholic entities that were directly involved in the operation of the schools, according to a statement issued on Friday by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The conference is the national assembly of bishops in Canada, formally recognised by the Catholic church and part of a global network of conferences.
Starting in 1831 and as recently as 1996, Canadas residential school system forcibly separated indigenous children from their families, subjecting them to malnourishment and physical and sexual abuse in what the countrys Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015 called cultural genocide.
Survivors recalled perpetual hunger and haunting loneliness, with schools run under the threat and frequent use of force.

and into prison.

(119,362 posts)2. How about reparations? Apologies don't mean anything without some action to
correct the damage.
Some involved are still alive, they need to be arrested and the Church must be held accountable.
You can shove your apology.
