Vatican tightens screws on conservatives over traditional Latin Mass

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -The Vatican on Saturday warned conservative Roman Catholics who have balked at Pope Francis' decision to restrict the old traditionalist Latin Mass that they were sowing division and engaging in "sterile polemics".

The Vatican department overseeing sacraments and liturgy issued a directive in response to bishops' requests for clarification following a document in July in which Francis overturned decisions by his two predecessors and tightened access to the Mass.

Since July some conservatives, including bishops, have openly defied the pope, resulting in the latest chapter of what some have dubbed the Church's "liturgy wars".

Religious conservatives in the United States in particular have used the Latin Mass debate to align with politically conservative media outlets to criticise the pope over a host of other issues such as climate change, immigration and social justice.

These "uber Catholics" are fringe cults to me. If they don't like the Catholic church, leave it! SharonAnn Dec 2021 #1
There's nothing like a nice Latin Mass, but sure as hell wouldn't fight the pope over it. Irish_Dem Dec 2021 #2

I'm just so tired of uber right-wingers in religion and politics. Judgemental, power-hungry,greedy, hypocrites without compassion.

The pope knows American Catholics always do their own thing.

But I think he is getting sick of the the right wing nut jobs in the Church.
Good, I hope he comes down hard on them.

fundamentalist religious zealots in a killing cult of catholic (purposeful small "c" meaning universal) christian "soldiering" whose beliefs allow little to no human redemption nor charity and who set themselves up as the arbiters of their Lord's perfect judgments on the human condition. This particular "sin" has been settled for decades; it's the least controversial issue of their "conservative" uber-elitist mindset on everything from spoken heretical tongues to heinous ROL crimes against children. Nevermind the fact it won't bring but an infinitesimally small group of narrow-minded loudmouths into their fold to fill their insatiable collection plates with filthy lucre. Amen!
