Related: About this forumMay 1 Official beginning of the Global Methodist Church - the conservatives
This was announced this morning in our worship service. The Global Methodists are the breakaway faction which is far more conservative than the UMC and has raised so much ruckus which resulted in "branding" the UMC as intolerant. The majority of these churches are in Africa and the Philippines with the next largest portion in the US.

For a time it appeared the conservative group was "soiling the nest" in an attempt to make the progressive part of the denomination break away. I am glad they are leaving us; after all they started it.
What is expected next is a slow ripple effect of UMC congregations moving the the Global. (I expect a wave of membership transfers to occur first, followed by congregational moves. ) Our church should expect a number of membership transfers from more conservative congregations, for example. We also expect to lose some members.

(4,635 posts)Actually, I'd have called it fundamentalist, espousing literal Bible language per KJ, and guess what? That church building and congregation with that exclusiveness and its aging members no longer exists, leveled to the ground in fact, as members left for more liberal churches with a more welcoming attitude toward diversity, and a service vision within their community. Such a shame
Surprised, but not at all unhappy, by this news!

(40,120 posts)That is exactly the way/reason the Methodist Church started.
They became known as 'The Holy Club' or 'Methodists' because of the methodical way in which they carried out their Christian faith. John Wesley later used the term Methodist himself to mean the methodical pursuit of biblical holiness. In 1738 John Wesley had a profound spiritual experience.Jul 12, 2011

They broke away from the Church of England which broke away from the Catholic Church.
History shows that there will be more breakaways.

and Methodist Episcopal Church. (abolitionist)
In 1938 the two denominations reunited as the Methodist Church.
My church here in Fort Worth built a new sanctuary (groundbreaking in 1929) and another Methodist church nearby merged with our congregation in 1939. That congregation walked over to our new building (both churches were in downtown Fort Worth) for the dedication.
I do not know which one was MESouth but one of them was.
I fully expect our church to remain in the United Methodist Church. We may lose some members to the Global, but we should also gain members from the churches which join the Global.
This has been a very long hard road; it is a relief to finally see the fork ahead. I have always thought the conservative group believed they could soil the nest enough that the progressive churches would leave. Under Book of Discipline rules, all property is owned by the Conferences and would be surrendered by churches which left. I can just imagine them salivating over these properties. In the agreement, Conferences were allowed to waive the surrender of property, which is what happened here. As it turns out, the conservatives are doing the leaving.
