On Friday, leaders in the Catholic Church, of which Biden is a member, responded.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops posted a statement online that, while it didnt mentioned Biden by name, seemed to clearly reprimand the vice-president for the public action opposing the Churchs teachings, Religion News Service reports.

When a prominent Catholic politician publicly and voluntarily officiates at a ceremony to solemnize the relationship of two people of the same-sex, confusion arises regarding Catholic teaching on marriage and the corresponding moral obligations of Catholics, wrote Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The statement was cosigned by Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone and Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski.

There is no more "confusion" regarding Caholic teaching from this than when a Catholic judge marries two divorced persons. This is a civil act not a religious one.

The child abuse scandal has nothing to do with religious belief. It's about protection of an institution by its leadership even at the cost of its core values.
This is an attempt to extend religious beliefs into governmental acts.
They could not be more dissimilar.

(11,573 posts)7. When the SCOTUS ruling came down on a Friday,
the two local judges who stayed in their chambers to officiate at weddings-- instead of haring off to the golf coursefor the afternoon--are both Catholics.
All marriages are civil marriages, even if there's a religious ceremony.
