Have you ever discovered an incident from your own familys history in a famous work of art? I have.
As a child, my mother would tell me stories about our familys experiences during the Holocaust. Some of them had happened to her parents, Chaya and Mendel, who had fled to the Soviet Union after the Nazi invasion of Poland.
Most of the stories about our extended family were conveyed to my grandparents, uncles and mother for the first time in the late 1950s when my grandmothers sister Leah came to visit them in Israel. A survivor of Auschwitz, she had emigrated to France after the war.
The most horrifying story was about Chaya and Leahs first cousin Hela. On Sept. 1, 1939, the day Germany invaded Poland, she and her husband were in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on their way to New Yorks Worlds Fair. They had left behind a teenage son and a young daughter and were now powerless to help them.

(33,565 posts)Lets read more of each others stories, especially those told by the voices we dont hear enough. It will make us better people.
And I like his point about McMinn County TN - like if we think about it . . . those in the education system are being cut off from Empathy and the ability to see others as human beings.

(54,854 posts)I read a variety of books. Right now, I am reading the history of comics. It touches on how other groups were portrayed, or not. How minority voices were not heard or had to be disguised in order to get into the mainstream. Of course, it also brought up some of the same arguments we are seeing today about other forms of art/media...."won't SOMEBODY think of the children??!'.
My husband and I watch an inordinate amount of TV/movies. While we love our fun watches, we also watch a number of educational shows, histories, documentaries on a wide variety of groups and peoples.
The one thing I have learned in the recent days, is how uneducated people are, including many here, when it comes to the Holocaust and Jews. It is sobering, sad, and, frankly, has pissed me the fuck off, too! There have been at least twice as many threads about Whoopi's 2-week suspension (I don't think the punishment fits the "crime" in this case), then there were about the original offense, or more jarring, when a Texas synagogue and Jews were held hostage, it generated much less discussion and concern than the current suspension of a TV personality.

My husband is addicted to Nat Geo, the Smithsonian Channel, Discovery, etc. etc. Don't get him started on Ancient Aliens - but I'm going to share 'his though' here . . .
The Gio: "The world is not ready for an alien presence. We can barely handle differences in religion, race and gender -
Ad - can you imagine if if asexual in appearance beings show up and start telling us they were our magical god in the sky 10K years ago? "
Rant Follows: Something something something - Kartrashians, blah blah, Mamma June culture.
Some things though - they CANNOT just be shiny objects. The hostage taking terrorist should NOT be a shiny object. Is it because it was 'too tough' to have an in depth discussion about? It's easier to talk about a movie star? And their punishment?
But - we can't have an HONEST discussion about the Shoah? We can't do that as a country? As a site?
I'm rambling now.
