(Jewish Group) Republican Jews call on Mastriano, GOP candidate for PA governor, to stop using Gab

The Republican Jewish Coalition has joined the chorus calling on Pennsylvania’s far-right Republican gubernatorial candidate to stop promoting his campaign on Gab, a social media network favored by extremists.

Doug Mastriano has 38,000 followers on Gab, a self-proclaimed “free speech” platform that hosts content prohibited on more mainstream sites. It grew in popularity after Twitter and other networks cracked down on extremists in recent years. Mastriano has also reportedly paid for “campaign consulting,” which makes new Gab users automatically follow him.

Gab is well known as a hospitable place for antisemitic, racist and anti-LGBT+ content. Gab’s founder, Andrew Torba, left Twitter after posting antisemitic content there; an analysis by the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism found that antisemitic Gab posts are easily accessible from Twitter. In one notable case, the shooter who killed 11 Jews in their synagogue on Shabbat in Pittsburgh in 2018 regularly used the network.

“Jewish voters expect candidates to condemn antisemitism, whether it comes from the far left or the far right — and to shun those who espouse it,” Matt Brooks, the Republican Jewish Coalition’s executive director, told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday. “We strongly urge Doug Mastriano to end his association with Gab, a social network rightly seen by Jewish Americans as a cesspool of bigotry and antisemitism.”

It's like Jews for Hitler. Unfortunately, there probably were some of those before Kristallnacht, at least. A few may have stayed onboard until they were rounded up themselves.

This website is full of assholes and bigots

Gab caters to far-right extremists, including those who have been banned from other platforms. The site is filled with antisemites, white nationalists, and neo-Nazis. One of its users was the mass shooter who allegedly killed 11 people at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in 2018.

Torba acts as the voice and leader of Gab and has made clear that he welcomes antisemitism on the site. Media Matters looked at recent activity on his account, which new Gab users automatically follow, and found that Torba reposted claims that Jews are “subversive”; that they’re in control of the government, media, and financial institutions; and that they’re Christ killers. He also reposted a conspiracy theory blaming Jews for “white genocide” and praise of Gab for offering “differing opinions” on the Holocaust.

In recent days, Republicans and Democrats have criticized Mastriano for his close ties to Gab. Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said, in part, that “Mastriano’s campaign unfortunately seems intent on sending a message of exclusion.”

Torba recently confirmed that he wants to exclude Jews, including prominent right-wing commentators.
