Scientists just discovered an astonishing way to create energy out of thin air: The sky is quite literally the limitStory by Nick Paschal Yesterday 6:00 AM
ts a magical time for clean energy production. Methods like wind and solar power are leading the way, but they may soon have competition because similar to a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat scientists in Australia have found a way to pull electricity out of thin air.
The magicians in this story are Dr. Rhys Grinter, Ph.D. student Ashleigh Kropp, and Professor Chris Greening from the Monash University Biomedicine Discovery Institute in Melbourne, Australia. The scientific journal, Nature, published their findings.
But this is no childrens magic trick. These scientists produced and analyzed a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium. The enzyme, called Huc, pulls hydrogen from the atmosphere and converts it into electricity.
Finding alternative power sources is crucial as we work to move away from dirty energy. Mining, drilling, and burning dirty energy sources like coal, crude oil, and natural gas create numerous problems for our health and the planet.

I wonder what voltage it produces? If it is in the microvolts or less, it would be kind of useless.

(13,411 posts)5. So, how easy is it to consolidate the enzyme? What conditions need to be met?
How is the hydrogen to be captured?
Article says the enzyme can be "grown" quite easily. So maybe this is a breakthrough.

I'll take the "sky is the limit" any day. Now to scale up the energy conversions and distributions. That's where the government subsidy and oversight has to step in.

Half a century of similar rhetoric has generated far more complacency and wishful thinking than energy.
If one thinks solar and wind are "leading the way" one should stop smoking whatever it is that one is smoking.
The original "energy out of thin air" fool was Ayn Rand who also confused fantasy fiction with reality. It's been a problem.

Cool.
