(113,130 posts)We don't know if there are pre quakes before that thing ruptures or if small quakes are just normal stress relievers because they happen all the time along the fault. Literate people who were around for the last one didn't record anything that happened before all hell broke loose, they were too busy trying to make a living on the frontier.

(2,483 posts)in that area. that would be catastrophic with a huge casualty toll. buildings around that fault are not earthquake resistant.
This is morbid, but I would be curious to see that large earthquake slam the Mississippi. they said during the last huge earthquake there were 15 waves running both directions on the Mississippi. That would be incredible to see, but unfortunately a huge death toll would go along with it.
