Cambridge researchers studying cognition, behavior and the brain have concluded that people with dyslexia are specialized to explore the unknown. This is likely to play a fundamental role in human adaptation to changing environments.
They think this explorative bias has an evolutionary basis and plays a crucial role in our survival.
Based on these findingswhich were apparent across multiple domains from visual processing to memory and at all levels of analysisthe researchers argue that we need to change our perspective of dyslexia as a neurological disorder.

(934 posts)Having experience with autistic people of all ages and those in the fields that treat them, I have come to conclude, with much agreement from the professionals, the same could be said for autistic individuals. Their unique perspectives and stances taken against contemporary society should not be considered a neurological disorder but an adaptation in response to their social environments. I perceive it as part of an evolutionary process to steer humans away from their self destructive tendencies.

(123,433 posts)might have been autistic since who else could draw so well with no formal training. Also I think details with autism. Someone had to be excellent a details. Never known anyone autistic really well. My older brother may have had Aspergers'. He definitely took a stance against much. But absolutely I think there is more to many neurodivergent stories.
