Incredible Cave Paintings 8 Miles-Long Revealed Deep in Amazon Forest: The Sistine Chapel of Ancients

Tens of thousands of pristine cave paintings were found daubed across an eight-mile stretch of rock in a once-in-a-century discovery in Colombias Amazon rainforest.
Hailed as the Sistine Chapel of the Ancients, its the kind of discovery that changes the world of archaeology.
Believed to be 12,500 years old, the art is extremely detailed, and includes handprints and depictions of Ice Age megafauna like the mastodon, a relative of the mammoth, Ice Age horses, and giant ground sloths.
The discovery, made in Chiribiquete National Park in the south of Colombia, was actually made in 2019 but was kept quiet to be revealed in a major documentary called Jungle Mystery: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon.

(162,381 posts)Presumably, archaeologists also want to preserve as much time to study the art alone as they can, as the news could draw tourists, or even looters and artifact hunters to the site.
Thieves, looters, vandals are the absolute worst for irreplaceable artifacts!

Would love to know what those square waves represent.

(12,878 posts)I think the counts of each are significant. Maybe the waves are time units, or distance, or one or the other based on the type of wave.

(19,312 posts)If Ayers Rock had thick, lush vegetation all over it, it would likely look quite the same.
Ayers Rock is revered by the indigenous people of Australia, and no doubt this outcropping was considered a holy place or a place of power by South America's indigenous people.
Fascinating. What stories will be revealed after careful study? What a find!

Just kidding of course but I am amazed at the precision of their drawings and would like to learn more about their techniques and the meanings of the symbols.
Let's hope the archaeologists thoroughly document this wonderful site before allowing the public in. Perhaps the government can block off and isolate some sections for preservation.
Thanks for posting, Judi Lynn!......
