Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumAbout that "Christian Persecution" thing.
Not sure if I will be able to get my point across, but here goes.
Fox blowhards like Billo, are crying about Christians being killed by ISIS as proof that Christians are being persecuted. While it is tragic that anyone is the victim of murderous thugs, I don't think they have anything to make a specific issue of. They aren't being killed because they are Christians, they are being killed because they are not extremist Muslims. Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and anyone else who gets in their way have their necks at risk.
Rather, I see this as yet another example of religion's primary directive: Exterminate all who do not believe our Holy Book. Either by conversion or by the sword, opposing beliefs are not to be accepted. While some evangelists may claim that they are just trying to spread love, none of them are willing to let it stop there, they must have your conversion or they will keep talking. ISIS takes their evangelism to the extreme, but this is nothing new where religion is concerned.
The only group that is being persecuted, as always, is the atheists. And it comes from every direction. Even here on DU, comments by atheists are often alerted on, and often hid. And it's not Just in the middle east either, the streets of Paris aren't safe from religious extremists. So spare me the persecution crap.

(468 posts)You aren't the only person to have noticed this. They claim persecution over even the slightest thing and equate "you can't bible thump to my kid at school" to "murdering christians for sport." It is genuinely annoying.

(7,753 posts)who love to come here alert-trolling but can't actually tell you that 'cos they've been banned?
Your trouble is that you're part of the persecution of these poor, well-meaning, god-fearing deluded souls.

30. She no longer has to live in the closet
meeting up with other closeted Christians at highway rest stops to pray on the down low.
And they say this room is tough.
Imo, it's a thing, they WANT to be persecuted.

(16,458 posts)Christianity was a religion for outsiders in ancient Rome, it was considered a weird cult, but no to the level that Christians were hunted down and fed to lions in the arena.
That christian persecution was invented later to give the war-minded people of Rome a bloody background-story they could relate to.
"We preach love and forgiveness. Are you interested in..."
"Booooring!"
"Wait! Wait, I have some cool stories about wild animals and fights and blood."
And eventually Christians started believing their own tall stories.

(57,349 posts)No matter how they try to repackage it, it's still lame.
What Zeus did to Prometheus makes Jesus' crucifixion look like a bad hair day.
And Prometheus actually did something brave and selfless that benefited all of humanity.

(6,604 posts)is bound to feel threatened by those of us who either were fortunate enough to be raised without it or eventually opened their eyes.
It's a very small step from there to buying into the persecution garbage. All it takes is a little push.

(17,505 posts)Indeed.
But remember there are "salvation" religions that say "go out and spread the word" like Xianity and Islam.
And there are others that don't, like Hinduism and Buddhism.
All are guilty to some degree, but the salvations religions of the Abrahamic persuasion are the worst.
