Clarendon, Texas

The wife and I recently took a week off from work and took a road trip. We drove through parts of Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. It's still hard to believe what's going on in Colorado!

We passed through Clarendon, Texas coming and going and were bemused to see a whole bunch of big crosses and religious signs by the road all over Clarendon. I vaguely remember back in 2012 when a Clarendon resident, Jim Griffin, put up all those signs and crosses all over town. The original story is here.

The editor of the local paper, being a good Christian himself, suggested they should be removed because they seemed to convey a "Christians only" attitude. He was immediately labeled a Satanist, or Satan himself, naturally. See that one here.

It's a little spooky passing thru a town with all these crosses. We vowed to not spend one dime in that town. It's very off-putting, but beyond that, it's funny to think that people can be so deluded that they decide to spend a ton of their own money to further the delusion.

Sure is good to be back home again to this hedonist mecca otherwise known as Houston.

If the idea is to intimidate, it's effective. If to convert -- not so much.

I'm surprised since they believe so strongly in god that they don't seem to worry that Satan, who by all accounts, is damn near as powerful as god himself, is going to smite them mightily. If Satan is the bad-ass they claim he is, you don't want to piss him off either.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to live there. It's the most dysfunctional and corrupt area of Texas, IMO, and that's saying something.

Had to look up Clarendon on the google.

East Texas must have a pretty bad vampire problem as well, with all the churches and crosses littering the landscape.

He has a Satanic goatee. He also wears glasses, which clearly marks him as one of them dangerous intellekshuls (see Book of Balaam's Hairy Ass, ch.3 verse 2). He's probably a Communist too.

Thanks for posting this. I think it's important - or at least fun - for those of us in Jesus-Occupied America to post about this stuff. I can imagine DU'ers from other countries or more sane parts of the USA reading these posts and saying "WTF?"

As posted before, I recently re-located back South from Los Angeles. I grew up with this crap, but it's still taking some getting used to.

In my neighborhood, somebody has been going around nailing up small black-and-white signs, high up on telephone and utility poles. Each sign has a Bible verse painted on it, or a one-word message. Usually "Jesus" or "Repent."

The local newspaper recently got a letter from some anti-God grump (not me!). The letter complained about the signs and called them "littering." And added, "They all seem to be advertising some deity or other. Oh yes, Jesus..."

No end of the world!

But they won't care if it's 10, 20, or 50 years later, there will always be fools who are proclaiming the end of the world.

I don't think there is any way that we will be rid of religion in our lifetimes, but we can work to make the world more accepting of atheists and agnostics by being responsible, out atheists.

One person at a time. Ultimately you can only make yourself happy.
