Texas Mayor Defends City’s Jesus Sign: 'You Can’t Pin One Religion On Jesus'

A Texas mayor last week defended a city sign that reads “JESUS WELCOMES YOU TO HAWKINS,” saying there wasn’t anything wrong with it because “you can’t pin one religion on Jesus,” television station KETK reported.

Mayor Will Rogers led a city council meeting on Monday to hear opinions on the presence of the 18-foot-sign after the Freedom From Religion Foundation requested the sign be moved off city property, television station KLTV reported.

....

Rogers said he didn’t believe the sign violated the Constitution because Jesus was a public figure, KLTV reported.

“What violation is it for someone to welcome you into a town,” Rogers told the station. “If you don’t believe that Jesus existed, then he would be fiction. If he’s fiction, and you want to remove his name from everything then you need to remove every fiction name that there is across the country.”

“That means we couldn’t say Superman welcomes you to town,” Rogers continued.

Rogers said the sign isn’t officially on the city council’s agenda, so no action can be taken despite the public meeting, KLTV reported. According to the station, before anything is decided, a survey will be conducted to determine whether the sign is actually on city property.

I predict they'll take the path of Middleborough, MA that voted to give the public land that a large cross was built on to a local church rather than tear it down.

Get your head out of your ass!

I can only assume that he is thinking that the religion of Christianity is not a religion, but that Baptists are one religion and Methodists are another. I am sure that to him, Catholics are definitely not in the same religion as he is.

It will be the Government's care to maintain honest co-operation between Church and State; the struggle against materialistic views and for a real national community is just as much in the interest of the nation as in that of the welfare of our Christian faith. The Government, who regard Christianity as the unshakable foundation of the morals and moral code of the nation, attach the greatest value to friendly relations with the Holy See and are endeavouring to develop them.

He should have read this quote instead...

I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

One of the members of a group I hang with online, the Secular Humanist Society of East Texas, attended a recent City Council meeting in Hawkins and posted this on Facebook. The guys name is Nathaniel Walters and he tells us "we are not going to stop." Go Nate!!

I don't know if you will be able to see it or not. If not, I'm sorry. Will see if I can "fix" that. I believe the quote noted in the OP could be taken from this exchange.

Could if you wanted to, I don't think your Constitution has anything to say on that, does it?

What an incredibly dense, ignorant man.
