From Night Clubs to Christ: ACCORDION HELL

Hilarious article showcasing the recording careers of Jesus-grifters Jack and Rexella Van Impe. Though I have to say, namewise, "Rexella Van Impe" is almost as cool as "Cruella De Ville."

Note that one of the album covers is from 1978. So Cruel...er, Rexella's either had enough plastic surgery to Bondo a rusted-out 1978 Mack truck. Or she has a portrait in her basement growing older and older.

Didn't want to ruin the article by excerpting. It's short and worth the read.

but his later "Dr" records all have the same picture, one that would be suitable for a film noir poster from the early 1950s. I do not think this is an accident.

Even awake all night on my nights off and with no cable, I never got desperate enough to tune in Van Impe, not even with the sound off and rude music playing.

Yes, they do sound dingy and very sinful. You couldn't find me in one of them!

For his next record, Van Impe takes on one of the real bastions of evil of the early 1970s: the rock and roll musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Rather than an updated retelling of Biblical stories, Van Impe says, "Superstar is a new Christ, a false Christ and perhaps the preparatory forerunner of the one the Bible calls, the antichrist." Or just a bunch of hippies singing about Jesus, whichever.

For some reason I always thought the bastion of evil in the early 70s was the Nixon administration...I learned something new I guess...although I must confess I was a young man when Nixon was president so I had a first hand view of that crew of miscreants.
