Even if you managed to disprove the existence of God (be it philosophical or experimental), believers would just say "I don't care, I believe in him anyway."
Just the other day I posted a philosophical proof here on DU that an entity cannot be all-powerfull and all-knowing at the same time. (Criticism welcome and appreciated.) It leads to a crippling paradoxon. The only way for the god-entity to avoid it would be to abstain from interacting with his creation at all. The few believers who responded were unfazed even though it attacked the basics of christian doctrine.
They don't believe because they are convinced of something, they believe because they WANT to believe, they believe because it makes them happy.

(4,549 posts)I counted one "I just believe anyway" among a few ham-handed attempts at logic and the usual special pleading to promote an agenda. Too bad, it was an interesting premise that could have led to an interesting discussion.
nil desperandum
(654 posts)this is great, these types of analogies certainly make my christian friends get visibly uneasy....consequently those conversations about saving my immortal soul tend to be less apt to spring spontaneously from their lips.
Meaning we can just enjoy the moment without contemplating how sad they will be to see me burn for all eternity.

(7,911 posts)she would just get mad and pray all the harder for my soul. And since she's a nice person, and we get along so well, there's no sense in rocking the boat.
I think that many people need some kind of comfort from the hard knocks of life, and especially, from the fear of death. If they find that comfort in their private practice of their chosen religion, that's no skin off my nose. Of course if they try to push it at me, that's different story. I get positively cranky. And nobody wants to be around a cranky clown.

Don't you mean:
Of course WHEN they push it at me, that's the same ol' story.
