"Reincarnation is just another baseless belief!"? But in Chinese.

Is that what that fool is trying to say?

Kidding aside, I think what the Chinese did to Tibet was/is deplorable.

But I don't dare say so, because as a bitter atheist, I have certain standards to maintain.

right in the OP, as well as in the thread.

I am also offended that we were compared to the Communist Chinese government because we do not believe in reincarnation. I can't see why atheists are not able to find the treatment of the Tibetan people and their religion appalling, while still not believing in their religion. Those two things are not even in the same ballpark.

Indeed.

And here's hoping that when Tibet is free of the Chinese, they will work to become free of ancient ridiculous notions that give power to someone based on them.

As an individual, that is. I should strive to be more like him, or at least the persona that he shows in public.

You don't have to believe in his holiness or in Buddhism or reincarnation to like the guy, or to want Tibet free from China.

People who profess to believe in any old twaddle were positively encouraged to point out that rubbish like reincarnation was perfectly fine to believe in. After all, they've been choosing the Dalai Lama that was for ever so it must be real, right?

Naomi Rousseau's classic takedown, old but still worth a read. Especially for its swipes at famous Western Buddhist theologians like Richard Gere.

Rousseau also writes about her own long lhard road to atheism. Which of course means she's just a grumpy old poopyhead who's pining to fill the Buddha-shaped hole in her heart...

My Jewish family suffered horribly in the Holocaust, and thereafter emotionally for the rest of their lives. I certainly would never mock their suffering. At the same time, I have mocked in print and on the Web the Jewish beliefs I was brought up with. Those are two different things.

Similarly, I deplore the actions of China in Tibet. I also mock the nonsensical beliefs of Tibetan Buddhists. Those are two different things.

Do you really not see that, or are you just trying to score rhetorical points? (You're not succeeding at doing the latter.)
