Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumIf you believe in original sin you're a misogynistic asshole.
Blaming women for what happened in a fairy tale written by other misogynistic assholes is seriously fucked up.
That is all.

(18,219 posts)That is the first place in the Bible that blames women for some perceived sin, but it certainly isn't the last one.

(57,349 posts)Some beliefs really push my buttons and that is one of the biggies.
Anyone who believes that their god was justified for doing this to women is no ally of mine:
(Genesis 3:16)--"To the woman He said, 'I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you shall bring forth children; Yet your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.'"
Why would God increase the pain of childbirth because of Eve's disobedience to Him? Some think it is an unfair penalty to make all women suffer for Eve's sin.
The answer lies in two things. First, we must understand that Eve was the means God commanded to fill the earth with people. Her union with Adam was supposed to produce children for the perfect world that God had created. But, Eve rebelled against God. Since sin brings pain and suffering, it was a natural consequence that she have pain and suffering in the very thing for which she was brought forth because she had rebelled against God.

(27,985 posts)Some of the core tenents of Christianity focus on the wickedness of women.
Women are dangerous.
This article about the quiverful movement hit me hard:

(57,349 posts)She really nails it, the wheels are good too:
Plus, I knew that as a woman, I was particularly susceptible to deception by Satan. How many times, when we were discussing an important decision, had my husband said to me, What you are suggesting SOUNDS reasonable, but how do I know that Satan isnt using you to deceive me?
Well, according to the Bible, it was very likely that Satan WAS using me And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through child-bearingif they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. (1 Timothy 2:14-15 As a good Christian woman, the last thing I wanted was to be accused of having a Jezebel Spirit!! Jezebel is the bossy, bold and dominating woman, who wears the pants in the family, and in the Bible account, things ended badly for her: Throw her downJehu said. So they threw her down and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot. (2 Kings 9:33)
I wouldnt say that my husband used male privilege to control and dominate me and the kids. Male privilege was his rightful position. As Paul says in the book of 1 Corinthians, For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. And man was not created for woman, but woman for man.
Biblical marriage is supposed to be a living portrait of the relationship between Jesus and the church, the Bride of Christ. Jesus has all power, all authority which is given to him by HIS Father (the same way power and authority are given by God to earthly fathers).
So even though Id heard that absolute power corrupts absolutely, I couldnt believe thatGod-ordained authority could be abused because Greater love has no man than this: that he lay down his life for a friend. Jesus had that perfect love He was a servant-leader . and husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loves the Church, right?
We believed that while men were privileged with greater authority, they also were burdened with ultimate responsibility so a womans absolute dependence was really more of a hardship for the man than for the ones over whom he held God-ordained dominion.
The fact that women are still being subjugated like this in the 21st century is indeed evil.

(27,985 posts)And I agree that it's unreal how it's still an issue in 2015. I blame society for allowing so much religious privilege. Americans are so fucking critical of Islam but fall to see how our own society demands religious law be honored in a secular society. It's held women and every other minority group back in so many ways. Like your OP says, these were fairy tales written by bigoted misogynistic assholes to give themselves power. It's maddening.

(27,985 posts)It's such a selfish and incestuous cult that had mastered mind control so well. They pass this dangerous belief system on from birth, generation after generation. Like all forms of abuse, one has to have an enormous amount of courage to break the cycle.

(19,890 posts)17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
So it's Adam's sin, as well, and he also suffers for it.

Oh wait, that's women.
Timothy 2:14-15
Men were punished by getting to fuck, own women and run the world.
Yeah that was equal.

(12,239 posts)Nothing counts until the male does it so HE is ultimately and solely responsible- and then gets to kick the spouse around anyway. This is social conditioning more than any God in the picture. So when the male supremacy itself gets devalued by failure the universal spiteful fallback is to point the finger down ticket at the insurgent sex. No it is not too morally inspiring. Paul's overarching take, minus the bad grammar, is that everyone has been doing since the beginning of whatever. Instead of fingerpointing, help would be appreciated instead.
