Humanist group says Rankin County teacher called atheist student a "fool"

FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A humanist group has sent a letter to the Rankin County School District claiming that a teacher called an atheist student a "fool".

The American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center sent the letter on behalf of a parent whose child attends Northwest Rankin High School.

According to the group, a history teacher has frequently made derogatory comments about atheists and promoted Christianity during class. The teacher, who the group claims is a pastor of Rehobeth Baptist Church, reportedly announced to his class, “Atheists are throwing a fit because they don't have their own day. They do have their own day; it’s called April Fools’ Day, because you are a fool if you don't believe in God.”

The letter states that, as atheists, the student and the parent feel unwelcome in the district because of the teacher’s comments.

The group also references instances in the past where the school district allegedly endorsed religion.

The south is completely god addled and atheists are always being made to feel uncomfortable there. It's one reason I fled like I was shot out of a cannon as soon as I'd saved enough money. You can laugh at fools only so much before it dawns on you how vastly outnumbered you are by them and that the fools are the ones in charge.

Now I know there are good DUers who think Dixie is where good people go when they die. They're welcome to it. Articles like the OP are why I avoid it, even though I think it's some of the most gorgeous country on the planet.
