Since I'm pretty sure that even the dumbest Xian, even centuries ago...even the damn Puritans...could figure out the symbolism of a long, shaft-like object piercing a heart-shaped object.

I mean, you don't exactly have to be Dr. Freud to understand that visual metaphor.
