Groom your children, sexually abuse your children or coerce you into giving it more and more and more money. The sun does not display hypocrisy, it does not violate the separation of church and state, it does not whine about being under attack. It’s a pretty good source of light and heat.

...where they visit a planet which paralleled Earth except the Roman Empire never fell, but has otherwise progressed to the same technology level as 20th century Earth. But Kirk & company are mystified by the fact that there was a population of sun worshippers... but all becomes clear at the end when Uhura realizes that they are not sun worshippers, but rather Son worshippers. Ah, so, they are fully civilized after all! Ugh.

And one of the very few where a specifically Christian religion was mentioned. I'm surprised Gene Roddenberry approved that script.

The eastern empire didn't end until 1453, and was christian from the mid 300's, or more than 1,000 years. Even counting from the mythical founding of the republic around 500 BCE, that is only 800 years.

There were several instances where Picard made reference to old religious beliefs that died out with the advance of science.

She assigned that to them but it doesn't mean it was necessarily true. The episode left it up to an individual's own belief system.

Spock associates the "sun" worshipping with primitive superstitious cultures. Uhura explains that it's "son" worshipping. But not only does she indicate her approval, but the "light bulb" also goes off for the others. These people are no longer seen as having a primitive/superstitious belief system after all, but rather one that is more respectable and admirable.
