There's a total solar eclipse coming soon. Here's everything you need to know.

On April 8, afternoon will morph into night for about four minutes from northern Mexico to New England. The air will suddenly become colder by around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Birds and insects will fall silent in the darkness. Confused plants will ramp down their food production. Nocturnal animals, like owls and bats, will begin to stir.

'From Texas, the moon draws a straight path to Maine and Newfoundland, Canada.

Major cities in the path of totality are Mazatlán, Torreon, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Montreal, according to the Great American Eclipse website.

In most cities in the direct path, the moon will completely block out the sun for around three to four minutes. Mexico and southeastern Texas will see some of the longer durations of totality, hitting over four minutes. Austin; Toledo; Syracuse, N.Y.; and New Brunswick, Canada, will see the shortest times of totality, with less than two minutes. (The Great American Eclipse website also provides total eclipse times for cities along the path.)' . . .

Several large cities very close to the path of totality are St. Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, Toronto and Quebec. Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., are also within 200 miles of the direct path.'
