Related: About this forumI got in a head on collision today.
I'm ok. No broken bones. A young driver was turning right onto the road I was driving and came all the way into my lane...head on. Hes ok too, but shaken up.
Ive got whiplash and back, neck, and ankle strains. I've never been in a wreck before.
My car is totalled. I'm really relieved that no one was seriously hurt.
Need some DU magic dust....

We're very glad you and the other driver are ok... but one small point. Air bags were a government mandated solution. Just say'n. The auto companies tried to block it but couldn't because the government forced the issue.
"Live free or die" i guess they choose the latter and the first is just about freedom of corporations to exploit you and me not about true human freedom, it's about thier "freedom" not ours. The Republicans confuse the two. Just noticing...

(6,831 posts)follow up with your MD. Sometimes bruises can go deep and not be detected at skin level, but injure internal organs. If you suddenly develop an insatiable thirst, get to the ER. It means you've got an internal bleed. Anti-inflammatories work wonders, as do heating pads. But be aware of anything abnormal.

(5,926 posts)The soreness will not really set in until at least the third day. You could even have a concussion from the whiplash. Be very careful about nausea, dizziness, or any other possible signs of a concussion. If you need to get an MRI of your back, please do so! I hope the young driver had insurance. (1,204 posts)Does the other driver have insurance and stuff? Have you driven since the accident? How does that feel for you?
I was in a moderately bad accident back in 2012 (no one was injured, but it totaled both vehicles) For a few months I would tense up whenever I came up on a situation similar to the one that caused the accident (someone making left turn in front of me)
backtoblue
(11,681 posts)I'm in a rental right now and getting back behind the wheel was hard.
And I've never driven one of these new cars that don't have a key. It took me 20 minutes to figure out the radio and I had to ask a gas station clerk to figure out how to open the gas door (embarrassing)
Even riding with someone, I tense when cars pull out.
Overall, I'm on the mend though!

(9,610 posts)You will probably feel worse tomorrow and the next day.
Be sure to get x-rays to make sure nothing broke, and if it's still bad in a couple of weeks get them again; hairline fractures don't always show until they calcify.
Assuming no fracture, I recommend seeing a chiropractor right away to loosen up the whiplash. My first couple of accidents I waited a while on this. Next one I went same day - huge difference.
Massage therapy also helps tremendously to stop muscle spasms; if insurance won't cover then ask for physical therapy.
Something like Deep Blue for muscle rubs can help.
Feel better but I'm glad it wasn't a lot worse!

(11,681 posts)You were so right about the following few days of hell. I stayed on the couch and was REALLY sore. Muscle relaxers help.

(9,610 posts)Muscle relaxers do help. I couldn't really take them as they'd knock me out for 12-14 hours, so couldn't work. Nowadays when I have flareups of muscle spasms that I still get now and then, I just have a glass of wine, a natural muscle relaxant, to get to sleep.
Try a massage if you haven't already.

(25 posts)I'm glad that you weren't more seriously hurt. I'd keep a supply of ibuprofen, Tiger Balm, or substitutes at close hand, you're going to need them. Day three might have an unexpected "hello" for you, body pain-wise.
Most importantly, listen to your body, as it definitely will attempt to "talk" to you. Hear what it is trying to tell you; it's the truth! Don't assume that things will work themselves out on their own (but do be positive and believe that they will). Get the additional medical attention you need, whether that's x-rays, MRI's, massage / physical therapy, you name it. Ask about a good chiropractor or someone in a similar discipline. And reach out to friends, like you've done here, early and often. You never know how much some folks know about some things and you never realized it.
Lastly, don't worry (well, at least too much) about that totaled car. I know, easy for me to say. The way I would look at it, is "Thank you good 'ole car, for saving my life. You did your job!".
Be well ....

(32,059 posts)Be careful with that whiplash. I got one from the first time I was rear-ended in Los Angeles years ago. And then I was rear ended twice again in the following 3 years. Every time I got stressed for years it would spasm and I'd be back on muscle relaxants. I eventually saw a chiropractor who treated professional athletes in L.A. and he told me the best thing to keep it loose was walking. I've been walking for exercise ever since and after I started doing that it rarely went into spasm again on me.
So sorry about your car. Hope you don't have insurance hassles getting it replaced. Take care of yourself!
