Here's a quote I love from one of Ajahn Brahm's books and a multitude of his talks. He speaks of when he was a young British monk in a Thailand hospital suffering malaria.

He's one of my favorite teachers and he was taught by one of the best. I call this kind of teaching, "hardcore Dharma." Monks seem to get a lot of it.
