4. Is garlic used much in Japanese cuisine?

Most of my experience is with sushi, but on the few occasions many years ago that I've eaten hibachi, I don't recall there being garlic involved. I wonder how common garlic is in general with Japanese cooking.

You can buy fresh cloves, dried chips, garlic paste, and pickled garlic at most any supermarket in Japan.

You can get an idea of how garlic is used in Japanese cooking by checking out this website:

7. I've never seen dishes that look like that

with all that minced garlic on it. Is that common? It looks like they took some regular dishes and just spooned some minced garlic on top, to sell the garlic.

I watch a couple of food programs on NHK World Japan (Lunch On, Bento Expo) and I've never seen garlic used, at least not that I recall.

I remember reading in a Clavell novel that Koreans were referred to as "Garlic Eaters" so I wonder if it has been imported into the cuisine from there at some point, and how common it's use is in traditional dishes, or if it's localized.

Pickled garlic sounds interesting!
