2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumStrike Three: Feds Catch Bernie with $10 Million in Mystery Campaign Donations
For the third time this year, the Federal Election Commission has served notice to the campaign of Sen. Sanders for making a mess of their [campaign] financial house. In the last two notices, the FEC noted over-limit and potentially illegal foreign contributions to the campaign, both with warnings of an audit.
But those egregious violation seem like typographical errors compared to the newest FEC notice to the Sanders campaign. The regulators have spotted more than $10 million that snuck into Sanders' campaign coffers from with no apparent accounting as to what it came from. Ten. Million. Dollars.
FEC's notice addresses Sanders' July 2015 campaign report, in which the campaign accounted for $3 million in individual, itemized contributions, but his full filing shows total itemized contributions of well over $13 million.

(110,159 posts)The word "view" in the name of this site is not meant to define "opinion." For any blog or blogger to claim to represent "the people's" opinion would be foolish. The word view here is view as in a "bird's eye view" - in other words, perspective. Our goal is to analyze issues with the primary perspective of how totalities policies affect ordinary people, and what it means from that view, or perspective.
This blog is devoted to examining issues from a liberal perspective, on factual bases and on fair analysis. This site is also deeply zealous about liberal Democratic activism. At The People's View, we are committed to giving readers as much additional resources (mostly via links) as possible to educate as well as activate. The People's View is also a public policy blog for reasoned debate and discussion.
We are by and large a band of writers who do this as a labor of love, we have no outside funding or affiliation, none of our writers are paid, and most of us have day jobs not connected to TPV. In fact, aside from occasional donations from individuals using the Donate button on our site and a slight Google Adsense ad revenue, we generate no revenue at all. You can support this rag tag operation put together and maintained by individual initiative and blossomed by our core group of writers, you can make a donation here.

Hiding damaging financial information from the public until after voting is over is a too-common political tactic, especially among GOP candidates.

(9,906 posts)Sanders campaign started April 30. In this Politico story, the campaign stated they had raised $13.7 million from April 30th to June 30.
"76 percent of the Vermont senators donations were $200 or less, amounting to just under $10.5 million of the $13.7 his campaign raised through the end of June.
The $15.2 million comes from a transfer of $1.5 million from his Senate campaign committee.
http://www.politico.com/story/2015/07/bernie-sanders-campaign-finance-fec-15-million-2016-120164
There were several stories and campaign announcements regarding the amount that matches the report:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/02/politics/bernie-sanders-fundraising/
Campaign Finance Institute has two charts that support the reported numbers:
Here: http://www.cfinst.org/pdf/federal/president/2016/Table1_Rec-Cash.pdf
And here:

At the end of the day, nothing "mysterious" but a staffer making a mistake in the paperwork.
