So much for us not having an economic message.
Check it for yourself.

(53,866 posts)to dismiss that race played an important role, is to be willfully blind to racism.

(10,173 posts)Demonizing BLM, for instance, was effective on Donald's part. But criminal justice reform is critical- over criminalization affects blacks disproportionately but also poor whites. You wouldn't hear this from Fox News though.

Sexist too. At their grubby little cores, they are racist, sexist and stupid.
And I won't use the "alt-right" bullshit whitewashing of the RACISTS either.

(1,499 posts)But NONE of those voters were with Bernie.
They were the Reagan (not really) Democrats living in the suburbs who the Third Way thinks we can attract with tough talk on terrorism/Iran/etc., support for the death penalty/tough on crime, silence on such issues as no federal prosecution of blue-clad killers, "respect for the 2nd Amendment (an Amendment which is in popular culture nothing more than a free pass for white suburbanites to line up at the local Gander Mountain to "protect themselves" from people who look like me), etc.
WE CAN'T. They are hopeless.

Uponthegears
(1,499 posts)And that is what (ostensibly) carried the day for that psychopathic orangutan.
Those upper middle class white folks living out in the suburbs, the so-called "Reagan Democrats" (you know, the ones we were supposed to get back with the Third Way's moderate approach) proved that they are almost to a person racist, homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic, and Islamophobic cretins whose votes we will NEVER get. We win by melding oppressed groups, not by dividing them.

(52,742 posts)It also means that we need to loudly and incessantly tell all those who are saying, "we need to find a way to work with the racist, sexist fuckwads" to drop dead in a large heap of their own effluvia.

(53,866 posts)people who truly believe bernie would have won this, don't really want to believe that she lost for reasons that were not about economics or messaging. other people who generally like to deny racism, have switched to 'identity politics' is the problem.
none of this is supported by any facts.

(15,042 posts)I looked at the Ohio exit poll and noticed that Trump won big among people who were most concerned about immigration and terrorism, just like in the national ones. He also won big among evangelicals, like in the rest of the country.
One that stood out for me among Ohio voters was the level of concern about Clinton's private email server! 50% of the respondents said it bothered them "a lot."
50%?! You've got to be kidding me!
Among those people, Trump won 90% to 5%! Clinton won big among everyone who answered "some" (65 to 32), "not much" (90 to 5) or "not at all" (90 to 6).
Were they bothered by private emails in the past and the massive purges that happened then, such us during the Dumbya years? Or do about 50% of Ohioans listen to RW radio and watch FOX News now? Of course, even the so-called "liberal media" harped on it too!
La Lioness Priyanka
(53,866 posts)are denying it in the face of a lot of evidence, doubt this one piece will change their minds
Buckeye_Democrat
(15,042 posts)There's this:
Nearly half of Trump's supporters described African Americans as more "violent" than whites. The same proportion described African Americans as more "criminal" than whites, while 40 percent described them as more "lazy" than whites.
Yet there's also this:
In smaller, but still significant, numbers, Clinton backers also viewed blacks more critically than whites with regard to certain personality traits. Nearly one-third of Clinton supporters described blacks as more "violent" and "criminal" than whites, and one-quarter described them as more "lazy" than whites.
Everyone has their reasons for voting the way they do. I vote for Democrats because I think they're more likely to help vulnerable people, whether it's from economic or social struggles. Yet I know that they don't always accomplish it, or even try very hard sometimes.
There was a study a few years ago that showed even the Democratic representatives were more aligned with policies that the wealthy or middle class favored over policies that the poor favored. It's just that Republicans were far worse that way, so Democrats were superior (to me) on a comparative basis.

(1,499 posts)Trump ran on NOTHING but hate. He NEVER outlined a clear, or even coherent, economic message.
Every single person who voted for him is either a racist/misogynist/homophobe/xenophobe/or Islamophobe (or all the above) OR they are too stupid for words and thought they could bring a revolution that: (a) is not happening; and, (b) they wouldn't fight in even if it did.

(1,499 posts)Want to SMH over and over again because this is the polar opposite of what many folks have been saying ever since the election (i.e., that it's Bernie's working class voters who cost Hillary the election, or, in some of the OPs, that the working class is fundamentally racist and we can't attract them without being racist as a party).
Well, the fact is that WE DID ATTRACT THEM without being racist as a party (well, not entirely anyway, but you know what I mean).
Finally, we are coming to the realization that working people aren't the enemy, it's the friggin' Republicans who left our party (and OUR CITIES, AND OUR NEIGHBORHOODS, AND OUR SCHOOLS) to join hands with Ronald Reagan and aren't ever coming back.

(220 posts)The toupee'd monstrosity did nothing but excite the crazies in the republican base into a feeding frenzy. It still alienated a fair number of republican voters as well, they too had incredibly low turn out. The core issue is that Clinton was not seen as having any galvanizing aspect for our base, so many dems/young voters didnt campaign or come out to vote.
Which leaves the fundamental point, we have WAY more supporters by sheer number, they're just completely unreliable (which as an aside isn't always their fault). We win every election with decent turnout, we just need to do everything in our power ensure as many people as possible vote.
JI7
(90,527 posts)immigration but not in the GE.
Blue Shoes
(220 posts)The most fervent support for the republican party's platform comes from the far right racist wing. They also tend to be much older, giving them much more time to vote, as opposed to the Democratic base which is either jaded (students) or has to sacrifice by taking a day off work (the working poor).
These factors basically mean that for us, its all about just trying to galvanize as many people as possible; voter turnout is paramount.
fwgmaryland
(3 posts)She was forced to focus on more fundamental issues such as bigotry and racism, but clearly these basic issues weren't as important to these voters, it's unfortunate that she was forced to focus on her opponent's character over her policy platform.

(10,721 posts)And Trump voters also supported candidates who are major proponents of the TPP. So, if not trade, it must be the anti-establishment mentality, right? Oh, what's that you say, the rate of incumbent re-election was even higher than normal for both the Senate and the House?
Wait, Clinton won among those most hurt by the recession?
Gee, that "working class whites/Clinton didn't have an economic message" narrative sure does seem to collapse under the weight of critical thought. Perhaps it should once and for all be put to rest.
Not to mention how insulting it is to suggest working class POC must not care about economic issues by suggesting working class whites supported Trump due to Clinton's lack of economic messaging.
Of course, I'm not saying Dems shouldn't do more outreach to rural areas of purple states like Obama did.
Lastly, Trump's jobs message was both vague and utterly unrealistic. As for "populism," we're talking about someone who is predictably the most Wall Street friendly President-elect ever.
There's no excuse for supporting Trump.

Obama won the primary because he got huge black and educated higher income whites.
Hillary did well with all other non black minorities and working class whites and white women .
